It’s great that you notified your parents about the situation–it’s good to tell a trusting adult when your safety is at risk. You may also want to consider notifying someone on school staff. Your school may have a policy in place for responding to these types of situations. And if they don’t, notifying them still helps them prepare and helps them keep you safe. Consider also telling your closest friends. If there’s ever a need, they can notify your parents for you.

Think about other ways to stay safe. Much like leaving an abusive relationship, dealing with a break up can also be difficult. Create a safety plan that will help keep you safe. For example, if you have security at school, have them walk you to your car if you drive. If you typically walk to/from school, have someone drop you off and pick you up.

There may also be legal options, like filing for a restraining or protective order. Each state has different guidelines so you will want to talk to someone in your community to find out more information. Regardless, it’s a good idea to keep a record of anything that happens with your ex-boyfriend. For example, keep detailed notes of the times he contacts you and anything he says to you. A good way to keep track is by keeping a journal. You never know when this information may come in handy. Above all, remember that you should call 911 if you ever feel like you’re in immediate danger.
