National Stalking Awareness Month

January 25, 2008

Last month, the U.S. Senate designated January 2008 as National Stalking Awareness Month. Although some people may take stalking lightly and think it is no big deal, it’s a very serious crime that can have deadly results.

Stalking is more than just following someone around or repeatedly calling them at home. Technology makes it easier and scarier to monitor a person’s every move at any given time. Cell phones used to stay in touch with family and friends can be used to track and harass you. And websites like MySpace and Facebook where you catch up with friends can provide others with private information that they can later use to harm you.

If you’ve been a victim of stalking, know someone who has or simply want to learn more, read our Safe Online Relationships and Cell Phones and Abuse pages. And check out the Stalking Resource Center to find out how to get help and stay safe.
