October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This is a time not just to reflect on the issue, but also a time to do something about it. And it’s not just domestic violence but dating violence as well because domestic violence doesn’t wait; violence starts when relationships start—many times when you’re a teen. So you may not be a victim of abuse, but chances are you know someone who is or was.
Even if you don’t feel that you’re very familiar with the issue, this is the perfect time to learn about domestic violence and how it affects people. Check out the pages on our website. We have lots of information on the issue. There are even quizzes to test your knowledge and to help you determine how healthy your relationship is.
But don’t stop there. When you feel you know enough to talk about it, do so. Tell your friends about the issue. Who knows? Maybe it’s something they needed to hear. Then grab a group of people and go take some action. Volunteer at a domestic violence organization; organize a community walk to spread awareness; wear purple, the official color of Domestic Violence Awareness Month; or write a letter to your lawmakers to tell them that education about the issue should start when relationships start.
There’s plenty that you can do. So don’t just hear about it—do something about it. This month, take time to speak out against domestic violence and give a voice to victims. Visit our take action pages to find out how you can get involved. Be a part of the movement to stop domestic violence.
