It’s that time of year again; time to celebrate that the school year is almost at its end. And for many juniors and seniors, it’s time to do the celebrating at prom.
Prom is also the time to reminisce about the time you’ve spent in high school, the friends you’ve made over the years and maybe even for a moment think about where you might be in the future. But for the most part, prom is about having fun. Unfortunately, beneath the strobe lights and party decorations, bad things can quietly lurk.
Prom should be fun and safe. Sadly, some people believe that prom is the time to “prove” to your partner how much you care about them by having sex. But putting your partner in a position where they have to prove how much they care about you is not okay. Forcing or pressuring someone to do something they don’t want to do sexually or don’t consent to is sexual assault.
So if you’re going to prom, think ahead about the things you’ll want to remember most about that unforgettable night: the celebration; the fun; the laughter. With thoughtfulness, preparation and good planning, you’ll be on your way to a fun and safe prom!
