Put on Your Jeans!

April 16, 2010

denim-dayWednesday, April 21st was another successful Denim Day! Now in its 11th year, Denim Day is a national campaign to raise awareness and educate the public about rape and sexual assault. In 1992, a rape case involving a man who raped an 18-year-old girl was dismissed by the Italian Supreme Court who argued that “because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them, and by removing the jeans it was no longer rape but consensual sex.” This led to women in the Italian Parliament to protest by wearing jeans to work.* And it’s become a national movement!

Wearing their jeans, lots of people showed their support on Wednesday, joining the movement to raise awareness and tell the world there is NO EXCUSE to rape!

If you know someone who is a victim of sexual assault or rape, there is help. The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) can provide counseling and information to victims. You can also find information about sexual assault here.
