Fifteen years ago, a not-yet-vice-president Senator Joseph Biden, understood that women everywhere were suffering an unbelievable amount of violence and abuse. But he didn’t just recognize it; he wanted to stop it. So in September 1994, he decided to do something about it. With the support of many, then-Senator Joseph Biden created the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) to help protect women from domestic and dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. This act has not only offered more support to victims, but has also provided them with more protections from abuse.
Last week, President Barack Obama showed his own commitment to ending violence against women by commemorating the 15th anniversary of this act, “calling upon men and women of all ages, communities, organizations, and all levels of government, to work in collaboration to end violence against women.”
